Tips for DIY Live Edge Countertop Projects

Live edge wood countertops offer a unique and organic element to your space. The term ‘live edge’ refers to an unsawn edge that reveals the natural characteristics of the lumber. Live edge countertops have grown in popularity due to the warmth and beauty of natural wood. Rich color tones, knots, and exciting texture inspires an exciting design within your space.

If you’re looking to bring the charm of DIY live edge countertops into your home, the Acacia Live Edge is a great option. The Acacia features two distinct colors within the board, which is good but causes an increase in planning. The light and dark pieces within the hardwood offer visual contrast as the colors themselves almost never match up between separate pieces. So, keep this in mind when choosing Acacia for your countertops.

The Acacia also features one natural edge and one side that is straight-cut. Because of the natural edge, the joints on long countertops or L-shaped joints will almost never match up. If you’re ordering two or more pieces, keep in mind that it is impossible to ‘match’ the wood colors, as they are delivered from stock.

Tips for DIY Live Edge Countertops

  • Live edge countertops are uniquely beautiful. Don’t opt for the Acacia if you’re looking for uniformity!
  • Before installing live edge countertops, it’s recommended to lay your pieces on a flat surface to map out your final project and visually plan on where each piece will go.
  • It’s always helpful to give yourself extra time in DIY projects, especially when it comes to planning and finishing.
  • Be prepared to router and sand live edge countertops where two pieces join together. This will allow you to create a faux live edge seam.
  • The Acacia pieces are best joined at an angle opposed to a straight edge seam.
  • The Acacia can be joined using a pocket screw or any other joint that an experienced DIYer would choose.
  • Acacia hardwood can be picky when it comes to mineral oil. We recommend DIYers choose a mineral oil that is food-safe. However, be prepared to add extra coats and plan for some extra time spent on this step.
  • To protect your Acacia countertops, we recommend applying two coats of a water-based poly. Make sure you follow manufacturer directions when applying.
