Size and Wood Species Options for DIY Butcher Block Projects

Choosing Hardwood Reflections Butcher Block for your DIY install is classic and timeless design choice! Here’s where you can get started planning your kitchen countertop, desk, workbench, laundry room shelves, or bar countertops.

Hardwood Reflections offers 11 wood species choices from 4’ to 10’ lengths to make your DIY Project happen! Unless listed, our product is unfinished so you will be able to choose the mineral oil, stain or lacquer to fulfill your home design.

Questions to help you choose your project’s wood species:

Do you want light or dark natured color?

Do you want straight or wavy grain?

Wood Choice Quick Picker

Acacia – Rich beauty that features a grain pattern only Mother Nature could create! Acacia’s color variety stays in the medium shades in its natural state with a few darker accents throughout the piece.

Finger joint Acacia – This thin stave finger-jointed Acacia is a colorful choice to brighten up any room. Take advantage of Mother Nature’s designs with the light and dark together in this butcher block.

Ash – Is it oak or is it ash!? The character of ash is fun and able to lighten any mood. Ash generally has a wider block with a tight but wavy grain and noticeable color changes throughout the butcher block piece making it easy to mix and match seams.

Ash (Thermally Modified) – This product is a darker-to-start wood color to easily get the dark look for any room you’re needed a countertop in.

Beech –  Naturally straight-grained and lays evenly across the entire piece. The Beech choices accept and shine with almost all finishes and colors. It’s a Bob Vila favorite calling beech, “Undeniably good looking.” The pieces are dense and require patience when cutting or trimming to size. Beech is second to maple on the pro’s choice list for cutting board-ready countertops.

Birch – Durable, most widely available, popular in all kitchen styles. Known for it’s straight and uniform grain and generally light-colored in nature. Birch is known for its uneven texture and needs some extra “love” throughout its life.

Distressed Eucalyptus – For a unique and stunning style, our distressed Eucalyptus is the way to go. Eucalyptus has a pristine directional quality to the grain, as well as outstanding durability. This countertop has been finished with UV stain for optimal longevity.

European Alder – This wood choice is a new trend for anyone interested in abundant and sustainable choice. This is generally straight-grained wood with some uniformed creativity in the knotty pieces of its look but is softer than it’s wood twin, birch. Our customers use alder if they’re designing a rustic-modern atmosphere in the room.

European Walnut – The European Walnut tree grows with a slight twist and has frequent branches creating an enjoyable knotty and creative grain. Because of that its one of the most admired and sought after hardwoods on the planet. European Walnut commonly referred to as Italian or English Walnut has been harvested for centuries as a precious and functional straight grain wood. When installed it makes any room glow with elegance.

Hevea – This is a light-blonde colored tropical wood that offers a nice finish at a great price.  Expect the grain to be straight and dense with a few brown streaks throughout. Looking for the most eco-friendly option on the market? Hevea is it!

Maple – Very dense wood grain that’s generally wavy and unique. It’s known and chosen as the #1 choice for cutting boards because of its hardiness and ability to take some abuse. Maple can mimic the look of cherry, mahogany and other exotic woods with the appropriate stain.

Oak – You’ll find the heart of nature in every oak piece with its tan to light brown natural color and even true-grain flowing throughout the butcher block. Oak butcher block countertops provide a naturally neutral color that doesn’t take away from a room, only adds a greater warmth of colors.

Saman with Epoxy River Run  The combination of the saman with the bright blue river down the middle makes for a stunning addition to any room. The saman wood features light to dark brown wood with a subtle natural design created by the grain within the piece.

Sapele –  This hardwood pronounced “sap-el-ly” or “sap-eel-ly” is a beautiful addition to any room adding an elegant and attractive mahogany feature for much less.  Sapille is naturally reddish in color with an attractive ribbon-like medium-width grain that flows from one piece to the next. Depending on how you position it, sapille can be an accent to other wood finishes or stand out as the centerpiece in the room.
