Butcher block is a popular material to use in the kitchen. However, we wanted to share some creative uses for our favorite material to inspire you to use butcher block for your DIY projects that go beyond the kitchen:
1. Garage Workspace
Anyone working in a garage or shop needs a good workbench. Having one with a heavy duty frame and a nice solid top is great. Having a butcher block top as the work surface allows the top to be hard enough to work on, but take the abuse and still look great. The wood tops have a little bit of give and take as a work surface, while a metal top does not. This allows some of the energy to be absorbed by the table when in use. Most of the butcher block tops are made with Hardwood Maple. You also have the option of just getting a butcher block top that can be added to any setup, be it a cabinet, workbench, or anything in-between.
2. Outdoor Cooking Area
A butcher block is a conversational piece in its own right, and having it crafted well will make it an eye-catching attraction for your outdoor cooking area as well as a handy place to prepare food. Among the best surfaces that answer for both issues are bamboo and teak; both exceptionally durable, and with surfaces that are harder for bacteria to find purchase. Marble and porcelain tops, either slabs or butted tile, are also popular options for similar reasons. But any choice in dense wood is equally viable.
3. Craft/ Sewing Table
Adding a butcher block to the top of a table, dresser, or changing table is a great way to DIY your own craft/ sewing table. Choosing a base with extra storage will give you a place to neatly store all of your supplies. Butcher block is known for its durability, making this project a wonderful (and practical) addition to your craft room.
4. Bathroom Vanity
Butcher block is a popular choice for kitchen countertops but we love to see it used in bathrooms as well. A bathroom vanity made from butcher block is a great way to add some extra warmth and interest to the space. Make sure to seal your butcher block to ensure that it remains water-proof for this high traffic area.
5. DIY Built-Ins
Adding butcher block to DIY built-in cabinets is the perfect way to add warmth and dimension to your shelving project. Butcher block offers a variety of wood types, grains, and colors so you can customize your shelves by contrasting textures and colors to create visual interest.
